This pressure to androgyny is an onus on us to create a new category, because the other two genders are a nice and tidy binary.
Ella’s just been voted off ‘The Enbyist Enby’ for being old, looking cis, and saying things she probably shouldn’t. This is her exit interview.
LOOKING Cis played from 1-6 May as part of the International Dublin Gay Theatre Festival, winning the festival’s Sean Meehan award.
This production was supported by Fingal County Council Arts Office.
LOOKING Cis will tour again in 2024.
This production has plenty to recommend it; Skolimowski’s writing is smart and well-paced and at points deftly emotionally nuanced, there is plenty of tongue in cheek humour, there are some moments of real connection with the audience that are special to be a part of, there is some clever use of pre-recorded audio and video clips to add variety and take the pressure off Skolimowski monologuing for the full hour, and there’s a dance number exactly when you need it.
There is comedy in this piece as well as a more serious exposition of what non-binary actually means for Ella.
If you want to learn more about what being non-binary actually means (but are afraid to ask!) then this thought-provoking piece definitely should not be missed.
